LOOSE USE OF "EQUATING": MIKE HUCKABEE, ENVIRONMENTALISTS, PORNOGRAPHERS, HOMOSEXUALS, PEDOPHILES, AND NECROPHILIACS

Mike Huckabee, who is a Republican running for U.S. President, reportedly co-wrote a book issued in 1998 and entitled, Kids Who Kill: Confronting Our Culture of Violence. Currently, there are number of groups claiming that by pointing to environmentalists, pornographers, homosexuals, pedophiles, necrophiliacs, and others as sources of cultural decay that he was "equating" them all together.

We don't agree with everything Huckabee says, to be sure. We don't hold with a Baptist minister holding public, secular office. We don't agree with Huckabee's interpretation of scripture and especially his use of Paul contrary to Jesus. Nevertheless, it is wrong to claim that he necessarily has equated all those types of people simply because he listed them together and that needs to be said clearly and plainly. We distance ourselves from the position that he was equating all those things.

To equate means to suggest that things are equal. Without asking him, it is wrong to conclude that Huckabee was saying that those things are equally bad.

If you want to defeat Huckabee, do it honestly.
