When Michael Dukakis was running for President in 1988, his opposition attacked him for having released Willie Horton from prison under a Furlough Program in 1986. Horton committed crimes when he was on furlough. Dukakis's "lenience" was blamed.
Now, Mike Huckabee is being attacked for doing something very similar. Wayne Dumond was paroled early. His release was championed in Arkansas by anti-Clintonites who blamed Bill Clinton for a too-long sentence, since Dumond had raped a supposed Clinton relative (as if we aren't all related). On release, Dumond raped and murdered.
Does this mean that so-called Liberals are now against rehabilitation? It does muddy the waters.
The real reason why people don't automatically rehabilitate is because society as a whole is sick. The whole of society needs rehabilitating.
Is there any guaranteed that without such societal-wide repentance that anyone will not be recidivistic? Barring some hugely invasive, artificial means, the answer is no. Are we to lock up everyone and throw away the key? Perhaps we are all already in prison.
