Here we have John W. Whitehead saying religion and politics don't mix, which is wrong. Real religion is real politics. Politics means people. Real Christianity is real people, meaning really honest people, no tricks. Anyway, he's saying then to go back to your family, by which he means mundanely close blood relations. Jesus didn't say to do that but rather to extend the family to those of the like spirit rather than mundanely close DNA. John is saying then to get the local politics (city councils) under the control of Christian morals. However, that's exactly where the false-Christian right started (controlling local school boards). So, we have here John sounding many right themes while interspersing hypocrisy. Don't follow him.
