Fascistic CA Senator, Ted Lieu, claims crackdown on "deceptive sexual-orientation conversion 'therapies'"

Clearly the Senator's press release is full of misinformation concerning change therapies. NARTH has contacted the Senator providing him with current research and corrections to these misleading statements, but he seems unwilling to rethink his position or modify in any way his outlandish pronouncements.

We are truly in a battle for survival. Left unchallenged this legislation will become a model for similar efforts nationwide. The opportunity for individuals of faith or conscience to contract freely with a counselor or therapist who shares their values concerning their unwanted homosexual attraction will be gone and evil will have truly triumphed.

NARTH needs your help and financial support to fight this legislation. Please go to:

Here's fascistic California Senator Ted Lieu's utterly false, misleading, desperate statement:

Senate panel cracks down on deceptive sexual-orientation conversion 'therapies'
April 23, 2012

Sen. Ted W. Lieu bill would be first in nation to regulate conversion therapy

SACRAMENTO – A key professions-review panel today approved a patient-protection plan by Sen. Ted W. Lieu that promises to help raise public awareness of bogus and unethical therapies by mental-health providers who promise to help change a person's sexual orientation.

"Under the guise of a California license, some therapists are taking advantage of vulnerable people by pushing dangerous sexual orientation-change efforts," Lieu said after the 5-3 vote by the nine-member Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee. "These bogus efforts have led in some cases to patients later committing suicide, as well as severe mental and physical anguish. This is junk science and it must stop."

Senate bill 1172 would ban children under 18 from undergoing so-called sexual orientation-change efforts and would require adults seeking such treatment to sign informed consent forms indicating they understand the potential dangers, including depression and suicide, of reparative therapy and that it has no medical basis.

"Being lesbian or gay is not a disease or mental disorder for the same reason that being a heterosexual is not a disease or a mental disorder," Lieu said. "The medical community is unanimous in stating that homosexuality is not a medical condition."

Citing nearly 40 years of research by mental health experts, SB 1172 is based on the following:
• An individual's sexual orientation, whether homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual, is not a disease, disorder, illness, deficiency or shortcoming.
• Sexual orientation change efforts pose critical health risks to lesbian, gay and bisexual people, including confusion, depression, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, shame, social withdrawal, suicide, substance abuse, stress, self-blame, decreased self-esteem and a host of anger, dysfunction and dehumanized feelings.
• There is insufficient evidence that any type of psychotherapy can change a person's sexual orientation. Instead, sexual orientation therapy in some cases has caused serious and lasting harm.

"Clearly, so-called conversion or reparative therapy is scientifically ineffective and has resulted in much harm," Lieu said. "Simply put, this is an unacceptable therapeutic practice."

SB 1172 now faces review by the Senate Judiciary Committee. No hearing date has yet been set, but may likely be May 8.

Senate panel cracks down on deceptive sexual-orientation conversion 'therapies' | Senator Ted Lieu

That statement is so full of falsehoods that how anyone with any brains could ever release it and endorse it is simply beyond the pale.

"...bogus and unethical therapies...." There is nothing bogus about it, and it is highly unethical to deny it. People have changed and not been harmed at all, quite the contrary. They are glad and healthier. Ted Lieu and his supporters want to pretend those changed people don't exist. They exist whether Ted Lieu tries to continue the cover-up of the facts or not.

"Under the guise of a California license, some therapists are taking advantage of vulnerable people by pushing dangerous sexual orientation-change efforts." It is more dangerous to withdraw help from people who want the truth and to change with the help and assistance of those who understand various methods that work in that regard. No two people are alike. Just because some don't respond does not mean that what works for others should be taken away.

"These bogus efforts have led in some cases to patients later committing suicide, as well as severe mental and physical anguish. This is junk science and it must stop." Where is the evidence that what NARTH and others have done is responsible for suicides, etc.? How many people commit suicide during or after undergoing sessions with pro-homosexuality licensed practitioners? Has Lieu conducted a study? Doctors' and psychologists' files are full of suicides. Will Lieu point the finger at the treatment in all of those cases? Of course he won't because he's ignorant and unethical in his approach to NARTH and the others who help people with unwanted same-sex attractions, as they should.

"Senate bill 1172 would ban children under 18 from undergoing so-called sexual orientation-change efforts and would require adults seeking such treatment to sign informed consent forms indicating they understand the potential dangers, including depression and suicide, of reparative therapy and that it has no medical basis." Listen to the audio below from the hearing. You will hear clear reasons why turning away children who look for help even without their parents' consent is a bad idea. Furthermore, Lieu wants a formal consent form that would state a flat-out lie about the treatment. Is he for such a consent form concerning all therapy? As I just said, there are suicides during and after all sorts of different treatments. No, this fascistic-minded fellow is singling out NARTH.

"'Being lesbian or gay is not a disease or mental disorder for the same reason that being a heterosexual is not a disease or a mental disorder,' Lieu said. 'The medical community is unanimous in stating that homosexuality is not a medical condition.'" Homosexuality is intrinsically disordered. It is largely the result of dysfunctional family life and often physical and psychological abuse and neglect. The statistical facts show this. Homosexuals suffer more ill-health that has nothing to do with whether or not they are "accepted." Those who change, greatly enhance their chances for a healthier life. The medical community is not unanimous. Furthermore, when the decision was made to change the definition, it was done without a full hearing. It was rather stealthily rammed through. Watch the video of Dr. Cummings below to learn much more about that. He was the lead person when the decision was taken. He now says that the real science was and is being ignored for politically correct reasons.

This is just redundant hype. It's cognitive dissonance at its worst. The main homosexual act is men using other men's anuses as sexual organs (as if they are vaginas). Yet, the world is supposed to fall for the lie that there is nothing inherently mentally ill in that act. Really, Senator Lieu, please grow up. In addition, when people confront their own shortcomings of various types and for whatever reasons, they often experience all of the symptoms mentioned. People in denial go through symptoms while they work to overcome. What Ted Lieu wants is for people to just wallow in the mire pretending that all is well. The same could be said for people with all sorts of sexually depraved problems. Doesn't the pedophile feel uncomfortable confronting the evil of his ways? Are we to make him comfortable with his unhealthy, disturbed thoughts and desires? No, we are to help him to overcome no matter how uncomfortable it may make him feel throughout the ordeal!

"'Clearly, so-called conversion or reparative therapy is scientifically ineffective and has resulted in much harm,' Lieu said. 'Simply put, this is an unacceptable therapeutic practice.'" How many people who have changed and been glad for it has Lieu talked with? Did he contact Exodus International before embarking upon his crusade against them?

Now, listen to this from the California Senate hearing yesterday. The audio gets much better into the recording:

The following should appear at the end of every post:

According to the IRS, "Know the law: Avoid political campaign intervention":

Tax-exempt section 501(c)(3) organizations like churches, universities, and hospitals must follow the law regarding political campaigns. Unfortunately, some don't know the law.

Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are prohibited from participating in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. The prohibition applies to campaigns at the federal, state and local level.

Violation of this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes. Section 501(c)(3) private foundations are subject to additional restrictions.

Political Campaign Intervention

Political campaign intervention includes any activities that favor or oppose one or more candidates for public office. The prohibition extends beyond candidate endorsements.

Contributions to political campaign funds, public statements of support or opposition (verbal or written) made by or on behalf of an organization, and the distribution of materials prepared by others that support or oppose any candidate for public office all violate the prohibition on political campaign intervention.

Factors in determining whether a communication results in political campaign intervention include the following:

  • Whether the statement identifies one or more candidates for a given public office
  • Whether the statement expresses approval or disapproval of one or more candidates' positions and/or actions
  • Whether the statement is delivered close in time to the election
  • Whether the statement makes reference to voting or an election
  • Whether the issue addressed distinguishes candidates for a given office

Many religious organizations believe, as we do, that the above constitutes a violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That said, we make the following absolutely clear here:

  • The Real Liberal Christian Church and Christian Commons Project not only do not endorse any candidate for any secular office, we say that Christianity forbids voting in such elections.
  • Furthermore, when we discuss any public-office holder's position, policy, action or inaction, we definitely are not encouraging anyone to vote for that office holder's position.
  • We are not trying to influence secular elections but rather want people to come out from that entire fallen system.
  • When we analyze or discuss what is termed "public policy," we do it entirely from a theological standpoint with an eye to educating professing Christians and those to whom we are openly always proselytizing to convert to authentic Christianity.
  • It is impossible for us to fully evangelize and proselytize without directly discussing the pros and cons of public policy and the positions of secular-office holders, hence the unconstitutionality of the IRS code on the matter.
  • We are not rich and wouldn't be looking for a fight regardless. What we cannot do is compromise our faith (which seeks to harm nobody, quite the contrary).
  • We render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. We render unto God what is God's.
  • When Caesar says to us that unless we shut up about the unrighteousness of Caesar's policies and practices, we will lose the ability of people who donate to us to declare their donations as deductions on their federal and state income-tax returns, we say to Caesar that we cannot shut up while exercising our religion in a very reasonable way.
  • We consider the IRS code on this matter as deliberate economic duress (a form of coercion) and a direct attempt by the federal government to censor dissenting, free political and religious speech.
  • It's not freedom of religion if they tax it.

And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. (Matthew 17:24-26)
