SCOTUS Cracks Down on Civil Asset Forfeiture: Hallelujah

I wonder how far the crackdown will go. I've always opposed the government taking anything from anyone without full due process of law.

To me, a huge degree of the forfeitures has been nothing less than the government stealing from people.

Yes, drug dealers and others do go around with large sums of cash, but the government has zero right to automatically assume that large sums are necessarily due to crime. The burden should always be on the government to show crime not merely suspicion or alleged suspicion.

The penalty has to fall within the law too. I like that about this new ruling concerning the value of the vehicle versus the statutory fine-amount.
