Yes, I know you believe that cockup (something done badly) idea. I agree with you about it. Evil turns people to do things badly, but evil is still a conspiracy.

In this particular case though, they did know Russia would step in. They also did know what they were targeting. The Israelis had been there working with them for months and months. The U.S. had conducted war games with them too. U.S. advisors were in the country at the time of the invasion. Both the U.S. and Israel had funded Georgia with billions of dollars in equipment, including hi-tech surveillance drones.

The Military-Industrial Complex is built upon hot and cold wars both large and small. Greedy corporations that make hundreds of billions of dollars in weapons, etc., (more than the rest of the world combined) do not want that flow to stop.

They need enemies. They create them via, among other methods, perception management. The last thing they want is world peace forever.

They knew Russia would react. They were counting on it. It was all planned in advance including the propaganda campaign in the U.S. mainstream media demonizing Russia as returning to the bad-old Soviet/Stalinist days, which is an out-and-out lie (unless they can be driven to it by the U.S. and Israeli neocons).

Everything the neocons planned was designed around causing increased fear in Americans, and others secondarily. They want Americans clamoring for security through military might (mammon for the Pentagon budget).

Follow the money, Steve. Follow it to the root cause. It's pure evil. Think about Jesus and what he went through on account of the greed and violence of the selfish souls at the top of the upside down worldly world.

That world still exists. It's constantly falling, but it's still right here. Jesus exposed it and set in motion its ultimate demise, but that last fall hasn't happened yet. You and I are facing the very same evil that spiked our beloved brother to the cross for telling the truth about the evil machinations and utter hypocrisy of those who placed themselves in power (stole the rightful inheritance of the true-hearted heir).

I generally prefer the cockup theory unless there is overwhelming evidence for the conspiracy theory.

And the Georgian military, or their political bosses, must have been very inexperienced if they thought Russia wouldn't protect South Ossetia.
