Nouriel Roubini is as good at this kind of economics right now as Garry Kasparov was at chess in his playing prime. No one can get all the variables right in his head, but he is right that the direction is still down. He's also right that the "geniuses," such as Paulson, may be catching on a bit that their scheming can't continue a pace. They have to do the right things (things they know) somewhat even though they hate it.
